I'm a scholar of Japanese and comparative literary studies, specializing in the media, visual, and intellectual cultures of contemporary Japan. I received my joint PhD in East Asian Languages & Civilizations and Comparative Literature from the University of Chicago in 2025.

I'm currently Teaching Assistant Professor of Japan Studies in the Department of World Languages & Cultures at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Previously I taught at UMass Boston, Wellesley College, and UChicago.

Broadly speaking, my research explores two interrelated problems: (1) how theory and criticism contribute to the diverse aesthetic genres that underpin them, and (2) how attention to questions of media can enrich understandings of theory’s global histories and participation in the world. I'm particularly interested in creating channels of communication between the underexplored theory and criticism of Japan’s recent past and current Euro-American critical debates, with an eye to reinvigorating these debates by deprovincializing their fundamental assumptions.

My work has been supported by grants like the Fulbright and Nippon Foundation fellowships, and my peer-reviewed writing has appeared in Verge: Studies in Global Asias.

Here's my CV.
